Serrekunda - The Gambia

Serrekunda is The Gambia’s largest town and is a higgledy piggledy maze of dusty streets and badly constructed compounds with tin roofs. It wasn’t always the case, 20 years ago Serrekunda was little more than a village. Since then it has grown beyond all recognition but with no logical plan for expansion and has swallowed up a number of smaller villages on its borders. It’s a noisy and crowded place an along the main road from Banjul to Basse (Gambia’s M1 as our reps like to call it) there are numerous roadside stalls selling hand crafted tables and chairs, shoes, bags, t-shirts, hair extensions plus an increasingly large number of internet cafes. A trip to the market here is always an experience and can be a real culture shock for some Europeans. There is a batik factory in Serrekunda that tourists can visit to see the batiks and tie die materials being made. The wrestling in Serrekunda is also worth a visit. There are a couple of places where matches take place, usually on a Sunday, our respresentatives can advise where the next match will be taking place.
