In colonial days, Georgetown as it was then called, was a busy and thriving administrative centre full of grand buildings. Today, Janjangbureh as the town is now known, is a sleepy town with a relaxed atmosphere. The town is located on the north side of MacCarthy Island, which has ferry services from both the north and south bank. Janjangbureh is very easy to walk around and there tends to be a lot less hassle than tourists experience on the coast. The old commissioners quarters, post office, police station, slave house, market and restaurants are all within walking distance of each other. The rest of MacCarthy Island is covered by fields of rice and groundnuts.
