Farafenni is a busy little town on the north bank, just over 100km upriver from Barra and lies on the Trans Gambian Highway, a road with numerous pot holes, that joins Casamance in the south, with Northern Senegal. The weekly market is a colourful affair, where people come from the surrounding area and merchants come from Senegal, Mauritania and Guinea to sell their goods. In fact the town is far more Senegalese than Gambia and CFA’s (Senegalese currency) is just as commonplace as the Dalasi as is the French language. The ferry across the river operates every hour and leaves from Bambatenda, about 6km south of Farafenni.
