What The Gambia Offers
The Gambia has a good deal to offer everyone - from those seeking a quiet beach holiday, to those after something a little more adventurous. Plus it's very warm, year round, relatively inexpensive and is only 6 hours away with no time difference...
Tourism in The Gambia has grown gradually and the country has learnt the lesson from other destinations that have become overdeveloped. There are no high-rise hotels and there are a number of internationally recognised sustainable tourism projects – if this is something that interests you, consider staying at Mandina Lodges or Sandele Eco-Retreat or read more about our sustainable tourism program.
In February 2010 hotels in The Gambia received official ratings for the first time, awarded by the Gambia Tourism Authority. The ratings are awarded largely due to the facilities rather than the service provided so we continue to use our own rating, which is represented with a hibiscus flower and based on the views of our customers and our own 30 years of experience. The GTA’s official ratings are:
- 5* HOTELS – Coco Ocean, The Kairaba, Ngala Lodge, Sheraton, Ocean Bay
- 4* HOTELS – Kombo Beach, Laico Atlantic
- 3* HOTELS – Bijilo Beach, Cape Point, Senegambia, Bungalow Beach, Sunset Beach
- 2* HOTELS – Palma Rima, African Village, Sarge’s
Bakotu, by some quirk of the system, received only a single star, however we are confident that it deserves its 3 rating and customer feedback tells us this is accurate. Some hotels are yet to receive their official ratings at the time of going to press and some properties, such as Mandina Lodges, Chimp Rehabilitation Project and Sandele Eco-Retreat, do not fit into the system of classification; we too consider these to be unique properties which offer quality accommodation in stunning settings but do not sit perfectly within The Luxury Collection.
